Louise and I, as Knock Knock Design, will be showing our films as part of Dutch Design Week, in an exhibition called Chaos and Order with Atelierdorp. The show is happening at Strijp X, a huge exhibition space that used to belong to Phillips. After a lot of hard work from everyone, the show opened yesterday with an amazing live jazz set from Valentina Paggio, which really kicked things off and which we all thoroughly enjoyed!

Nacho Carbonell and Atelierdorp

For the last two months, I have been in Eindhoven, Holland working for Nacho Carbonell... which has so far been really good! He's a great guy and I'm learning a lot! This is him, sitting on his famous 'Pump It Up' chair.

He is based in a collective in a converted church in Eindhoven called Atelierdorp. It's a great place to work, with many other designers and even students from the Eindhoven Design Academy. The film below is about the collective.

The Modern House

A while ago, whilst working at Faye Toogood, I was asked to make an architectural model and some mood boards for The Modern House, who needed some visuals for a new interior design service they would be offering to their clients. Unfortunately, I am unable to publish the photographs, but the final visuals can be viewed at the link below.

Matter Flyer No. 2

I received the second flyer in a series that I have been working on for the club Matter in conjunction with Village Green. Again I made a paper model, based around the idea of representing data - this time a kind of exploded pie chart.

Matter London at the O2 continued

I made a further series of paper sculptures for Village Green, again to be based on data representation, that may be appearing on Matter flyers in the near future. These are the rougher studies for the final models I made subsequently.

Grass

I have recently been working on a commission for which I had to create 3D lettering from astroturf grass. The typeface is in italics so some of the letter forms were very fine, which made the whole task very fiddly. I built wire frames and then covered them in the grass. It was incredibly labour intensive, but I got there in the end!

Infinite Drawers @ No-One

Recently I approached the art director at the Old Station Cafe to ask about the possibility of exhibiting in the space. Unfortunately they were booked up until next year, but offered me the window space in their clothes shop, No-One, next door. As they were already constructed, and seemed quite relevant, I decided to install the Infinite drawers, (see previous post). I wanted to incorporate clothes from the shop so they appeared alive - unfolding themselves out of the drawers. I love musicals particularly when Julie Andrews is involved. This work was inspired by Julie Andrews and the 'Spoon Full of Sugar' scene from Mary Poppins where she and the children tidy up their bedroom. When they snap their fingers, the furniture and objects become animate and the room begins to tidy itself.

Knock Knock Design @ Pulse 09

Earlier this month, Louise and I, as Knock Knock Design exhibited at Pulse 09 - an interiors trade fair at Earls Court.

We showcased a range of products in a site specific installation, featuring our Infinite drawers - a paper study that explores the problem of spilling drawers that get filled beyond their capacity and hints at the magical possibility of infinite space in drawers.

Products

Binocular Blind

The blind is a witty nod to the voyeuristic culture that we live in. Whilst it is ostensibly a white blind, the binocular print has eye holes where the lenses would be. This playfully allows those inside the house to observe what is going on outside.

Cut Out Clothes Hook

This coat hook is inspired by a traditional childhood activity where cut-out paper clothing with tabs, is folded around a paper doll. Our product transforms these tabs into hooks from which to hang clothing and accessories. It is water jet cut, in polished sheet steel, so can also be used as a mirror.

Origami Wallpaper

The design for this wallpaper is inspired by the folding instructions for an origami ‘crane bird’. It is digitally printed in two colour ways.

Printed, Pasted and Online

Roy snapped this on his way to work.

Matter London at the O2

I was lucky enough to get involved in doing some flyers with Village Green, for the relatively new club Matter at the O2. Matter is owned by Fabric - a favourite teenage haunt of mine - so I was pretty excited. I made a series of paper sculptures based on data representation. The first model was a a matrix of 3D pixels.

Small scale test:

Then Tom at Village Green did some magic photoshopping.

Me putting the final sculpture together:

Other sculptures from the series to follow!

Guillotine

I did some miniature cardboard studies of torture or execution devices.

Jam

Whilst interning at Jam I got involved with a number of different projects they were doing.

Doormat

I was thinking about how ridiculous it is that whenever I hide keys, I always hide them in the most obvious place. This was a quick adaption I made to a doormat, to make it accommodate my keys.

Hoxton Highland Cow

I was experimenting with adapting existing 70's sewing craft kits and giving them a more contermporary London feel..

Comic Napkin?

I had some napkins printed with comic book boxes for people to illustrate.

Knock Knock Films

Louise and I have created two stop frame animations that are based on imaginary products that are supposed to make your life easier or just make you feel good. You can check both films below or at our website.

The first is about magic chequered paint that saves you having to tile a floor. The idea came from a builders joke. Supposedly experienced builders often send young new recruits off to buy a pot of chequered or tartan paint.

The second is about an imaginary tissue box that makes you smile

The ODD Experiment

Early this year, the design agency ODD collaborated with YCN and launched a competition called The ODD Experiment. Since ODD were moving to a new premises, it offered young designers the chance to fill ODD's new and ample window space with whatever they liked. Louise and I came up with interactive clamp games for their windows, where instead of attempting to pick up soft toys, you could pick up fabric 3D letter shapes that spelt out THANK ODD.

New Designers

At New Designers 08, we decided to clad our stand in blackboards that we then used as a canvas to explain the work with annotations and illustrations. We had a lot of fun and managed to bag the Best Stand Award!

Maverik Showrooms

We held our external show at the end of our degree at the Maverik Showroom. Since we were the second year of graduates from our relatively new course, we called the show Second Class and decided on a postal theme for the window. We created giant cardboard letters that were strung together like packages.

Teabags

A while ago I attempted to make some tableware by slip casting tea bags. The porcelain was pretty unsuccessful because I lost much of the detail during the process, but the studies I did with actual tea bags had a very delicate and translucent quality which I thought there was something beautiful about.

Contour Hand Study

I wanted to try making some shapes by layering up hand-cut paper or card board. I started by making this study of a hand. I'd quite like to develop this and do some other shapes.

Relief Paper Lettering with Wallpaper

These are some images of a bunch of paper lettering I made in wallpaper for an installation I did at Cordy House

Paper Anniversary

I made this for my boyfriend Roy for our Paper Anniversay of 1 year. The tiny paper letters are threaded together and suspended within the match box.

Measuring Systems

After reading Corbusier's Modular, Louise and I started thinking about ways in which we measure stuff. A jar of ink and a pound of couscous later .... and these were the results. We're not really sure where this research is going but it was brilliant fun!

Watch

This is not a watch. This conceptual jewellery piece houses a tiny periscope that allows the user to observe unsuspecting individuals around them. It uses two convex lenses and a diamond cut mirror.

Spy Watch Studies

This is a study piece I did in cardboard for my Spy Watch. The face is loosely based on the Victorian opera fan, shown alongside.

Hook Book

Pop-Up Furniture

These are some pop-up experiments I did that explore furniture shapes.

Clock Face Pad

We often use a clock face to describe someone's position when we don’t want to point. This pad is intended to elevate the activity of people watching to something like a game; the user can jot down their observations of others around them.
It occurred to me afterwards that it could also function as a diary.

P Book

Hand-made pop-up book of things I like beginning with the letter P.
